Northwestern students need to get out more

As a student at the University of Chicago, I live in Hyde Park. People from the city of Chicago, however, tend to criticize Hyde Park as not "really" being Chicago, or at least, not representative of the South Side of Chicago. That is, we are seen to be a neighborhood that's really wealthy while being surrounded by poorer neighborhoods. Claiming to be from the South Side while living in Hyde Park, therefore, can sometimes be seen as being disingenuous.

Not, however, as Northwestern students claiming to be going to school "in Chicago," or even "near Chicago." For you see, while Hyde Park is still an actual Chicago neighborhood, and us UChicago students vote for aldermen and other elected city officials, Northwestern students attend school in Evanston, a suburb half an hour outside of the city by train. Now, some would say that such a distance qualifies them as being "close enough" to the city: after all, it can take half an hour to get to dow…

Last reactions from Scav

1. I think our team actually did pretty well this year. Yeah, we finished 5th, but given the inevitability of a sophomore slump (and a ridiculously strong performance from MacPierce and even Blint at the Scav Olympics), we did pretty well. We learned a bunch of things that we did wrong and should improve on next year.
2. That said, the two things we should definitely change are how the forum registration worked and the blood drive. We need to advertise the blood drive much more prevalently next year, with ads around South Campus the week beforehand. I need to start setting up the forum much earlier, and change it from an opt-in system to an opt-out one.
3. We did pretty well at Scav Olympics this year, considering the variation. We had no idea that Blint would win three events in a row. Otherwise, random variance accounted for our third (as opposed to first) place finish.
4. Lastly, this year was a lot of fun. We might have concerns next year because we're running out of people to…

Scav Day 1

As the first day of Scav has concluded, I can look back on it saying that the event so far has been a success for South Campus. Perhaps we will not get certain things, like lions (cough cough Max P), but we're making progress on all of the important showcase items, and we're hitting all of the time-sensitive items.

Case in point, the Scav Sheriff items. There was a debate held at 7PM in the BSLC. Not only did I arrive on time to be the Scav Captain, but we had a lively and humorous debate about irrelevant issues. I now need to go to the mudslinging competition at Scav Olympics, as well as make a campaign ad for myself. All in the spirit of fun, of course.

And as usual, I will end with yet another plug for our search result, Mama Shaq.

Blogging Scav Hunt, Day 0

So uh, I'm going to be blogging about Scav hunt while it happens.

Today's list release, which means that at midnight, the judges will make us do some convoluted task in order to get a copy of the list before they post it online in the morning. That's incredibly important, because the road trip needs to leave by then, and there are going to be a couple of items that will need to be done before day break on Thursday. Otherwise, it's just a hectic setup for our headquarters. Unlike other teams, we don't have a dedicated room to Scav in our dorm, so we're forced to basically rebuild everything from scratch.

Here's hoping this goes well.
